We have all the time in the world to pray to Him and our spiritual master to increase our eagerness to serve them more and more.

A famous King in India during the reign of Aurangazeb, who was known as Chatrapati Sivaji, was riding his marvelous horse in the forest as he hunted. While riding a big stone suddenly hit him in the head.

Since he was the King at that time this action made him extremely angry, and he began to wonder who would have the audacity to toss a stone at him. He began looking around to see who could have committed such a crime against him, but there was no one to be seen. Ever so slowly an old woman came and stood in front of him and told him that she was the one that had thrown the stone at him. The King was astounded and immediately wanted to know her reason behind throwing the stone.

The King immediately asked her what her reason was, and she silently explained, "I am sorry my Lord. I wanted to pluck those mangoes from this tree, I could not reach them. Hence I threw a stone to hit them, but unfortunately it hit your head. Please forgive me." Normally, Sivaji himself or any other person would have become angry and punished the offender, but by Krishna's mercy the King received a nice realization.

He thought to himself that if the tree, which was not a highly elevated living entity, could be so tolerant and merciful as to give sweet mangoes even when hit by some one, then as King, he should also be tolerant and merciful like the tree. The he looked at the woman and whole heartedly donated a handful of gold to the old woman. Many times, we are cited examples of lower living entities like grass and trees, which reminds us of how humble and tolerant we should be.

One should chant the holy names of the Lord in a humble state of mind, thinking oneself lower than the straw in the street. One should be more tolerant than a tree, devoid of all sense of false prestige and should be ready to offer all respects to others. In such a state of mind, one can chant the holy names of the Lord constantly.

The quality of tolerance of men is tremendously important not only to relish devotional service. It is essential part. even to live a peaceful life in this material world. We all have to tolerate the various kinds of miseries, which are forced upon us by the other living entities, by natural disturbances, and by our own mind and body. We have to tolerate the temporary nature of this world and we have to tolerate the political disturbances and cheaters all around.

Even when we come to a devotional service, in the beginning we all think that the whole environment is wonderful and everything is so nice. However, as time goes on, all our anarthas come out and we get into so many misunderstandings and nonsensical things, which is any way happening in the outside world as well. So what is the difference between the materialists and us?

The answer is nothing really, because we are just performing some glorified activity in the name of devotional service. The reason for this is because we lack the quality of tolerance, and so we tend to get agitated at even small things. However, by performing sincere devotional service some how or other, then we can develop these qualities within this life time. Just as the realization popped out of no where for Sivaji, Krishna will definitely supply us too with the nice realizations at the right time, which is when we deserve them.
