Though they gained little attention when published, anicent hermetic laws have been gaining more visibility in recent years. With the insurgence of motivational speakers speaking about the power of positive thinking, these laws have been re-visited. New Thought leaders have been relying on these hermetic laws to influence people towards mental transmutation, or the art of changing one's mental states.

So what are the seven hermetic laws? The first one is the principle of mentalism which embodies the truth that "all is mind". The second one is the principle of correspondence, or the idea that there is always a correspondence between all planes of being and life. The three planes are delineated as the great physical plane, the great mental plane and the great spiritual place. Correspondence states that there is a harmony, agreement and correspondence between these planes.

The third law is the principle of vibration, which refers to the idea that everything in the universe has motion in the form of vibrations. It states that the difference between varying appearances of matter, energy mind and spirit are the result of different vibrations. The principle of polarity is the fourth law, which is the idea that everything has two poles and an opposite. Simply put, everything is and isn't at the same time. There are two sides to everything, and opposites are identical in nature but different in degree.

Rhythm is the fifth principle. This is the idea that everything has a measured motion; a to and fro, a flow and inflow, a swing backward and forward; in a pendulum type movement. It states that there is transition enabled between poles. The sixth law is the principle of cause and effect. Basically this refers to the fact that there is a cause for every effect and vice versa. It states that there is no such thing as chance; thids is merely a term given to causes we don't readily understand.

Last is the principle of gender. This embodies the idea that everything has a gender; not necessarily a notion of sex, but rather referring to the ability to create in general. The masculine gender of all things is always in the direction of giving out or expressing, and the feminine is always in the direction of receiving impressions. The feminine also has the work of generating new thoughts and ideas, including the work of the imagination. This law states that there must be a balance between the masculine and feminine in order to have thoughtful action that breeds success.

Mental transmutation is simply the application of these principles. When one wants to change their mental state, they are influencing their vibration. Controlling rhythm, balancing gender and maintaining an even polarity ensures an even plane of being. When a person learns to correspond between their planes of being, they learn how to control the causes and effects in their life. All these actions combined allow one to fix their attention on, and actually live, in a more desirable state.
