It is quite difficult to develop good habits, and easier to develop negative ones. Negative habits, however, can become destructive, while good ones can make life healthier and happier. Stopping a bad habit is therefore important, and below you'll find habit reversal training methods as well as mind power techniques that help change bad habits:
1. Have awareness of what your negative patterns are
The very first step you have to take is to become aware of the things you need to change in yourself and the things you need to retain. If you don't know that what you're doing is negative, hurtful, or destructive, how can you expect to get rid of it? You should also have knowledge of the positive things you are doing so you can keep on doing them. One of the tips on stopping a bad habit, therefore, is to have awareness either by reflecting on your actions, or asking several friends and relatives of what they notice are negative practices you've been doing.
2. Be serious about wanting to improve on yourself
Part of habit reversal training is for you to really want to make changes. One of the mind power techniques is for you to really become serious in your mind, heart, and body, in terms of wanting to change bad habits. You should not tell your self that you want to eliminate the negatives because someone told you to - you should be serious in wanting to make the change because of your own self not because of other people. Remember that stopping a bad habit won't happen if you're not serious about the above mentioned goal.
3. Make a list of the pros and cons of the 'addiction' or pattern.
Another habit reversal training advice is for you to think about the good things that your habits can give you and the bad things they produce. For instance, if you are a chain smoker, you can say that the pro is: smoking can calm or relax you. While the cons are: you'll be more prone to developing lung and throat cancer, you'll be considered an addict, you'll need to spend more money to maintain your addiction, and many more. Included in mind power techniques is to always look at the list, specifically focus on the disadvantages or cons so that you'll remember that smoking is really bad and that you should stop doing it.
Other techniques that will enable you to change bad habits include: having a support group or finding someone e.g. a partner, a friend, etc, who wants to break from the habit or vice too, so that you can support each other and be stronger in stopping a bad habit; imagining the positive things that you'll enjoy once you eliminate your negative habit; and so forth.
