Whenever you think of the holidays, you cannot do so without thinking of Christmas angels. During the holidays you can spot these heavenly beings just about everywhere. They are on top of Christmas trees, guarding the countless manger scenes that are displayed, and they can even be seen hovering over busy streets in many towns by being affixed to the light posts. Christmas angels are as much a part of the holiday season as Santa Claus and snowmen.
The word angel itself is Greek for messenger. Symbolically, they represent purity, love and peace. In the bible, the story of the Nativity tells us that they were responsible for delivering the news of Jesus being born. They are also the focus of many carols that are sung during the winter season. They are an important part of the holiday as they are both symbolic and religious in nature. This is how they have found their way into holiday celebrations for centuries.
In schools around the globe, children make Christmas angels out of construction paper, beautifully adorned with pipe cleaners for halos and cotton balls for wings. Children love to dress up and portray the heavenly hosts for school programs that are held in the winter.
Christmas angels generally feature a female body with wings and a halo. They are usually adorned in a dress made of material that is flowing and white. However, you can find them dressed in many colors, especially when purchasing angel ornaments and other display pieces.
Whenever you spot one on top of a tree, she is usually lighted in one form or another. Some may feature a halo of lights either in white or multi colored bulbs. Some may have wings that are illuminated while others may be lit from under the dress and blink on and off.
Most are beautifully sculpted at least in part from ceramic or some other type of solid material. The wings and halo are usually made of a lighter fabric such as silk. Some Christmas angels may be holding a bible or a book of holiday carols. You will find others that may be holding a harp, holly, or even a little lamb.
These heavenly beings also make great holiday decorations for areas other than the holiday tree. There are life-sized statues available that can stand sweetly in the corner, and those that are designed to look as if they are floating freely.
This is sometimes the case when they are incorporated into a manger scene. Many people will hang them from a tree to appear as if they are flying over the newborn babe wrapped in swaddling clothes.
By shopping online you can find these wonderful beings in many different shapes and sizes. You will also find that they are crafted from many various materials, such as resin, wood, plastic, ceramic, crystal, colored glass, and many more.
Any of these Christmas decorations would make a great addition to the other types of ornamental decorum you may have in your home during the holiday season. They are meant to be messengers, so let them adorn your tree or your fireplace mantel to help you spread the meaning of the holiday cheer.
