Over the years, the existence of psychic skills has often been taken for granted and only a few people are able to develop the potential within. Psychic research has been resorted to in order to justify paranormal activities, supernatural abilities and other similar phenomena. Paranormal Science has and is continuously creating controversies from the early existence of man up to the present. It has stirred curiosity that often leaves a lot of unanswered questions lingering behind.
In studies conducted for psychic research, throughout the history of mankind there exist different phenomena that normal science does not cover. Parapsychologists proposed theories and conducted studies on paranormal activities such as Extrasensory Perception or ESP, the ability to give information to events beyond the senses particularly telepathy, clairvoyance, and precognition. They also studied on Psychokinesis or the movement of objects using the mind alone; Out-of-Body Experiences commonly known as astral projection wherein the soul is said to leave the body and travel on its own.
Psychic Research also introduced concepts on Altered States of Consciousness wherein a person uses the intellect to alter behavior and reactions to events; Precognitive Dreams or seeing the future in one's dream; Psychic Healing of physical ailments without the intervention of medical tools; Apparitions or the ability to see departed persons in their soul form or what is commonly known to people as ghosts; Dowsing which is the ability to locate things, places or even sources of water underneath the earth's surface; and the theory on the existence of Poltergeists, ghosts who make sounds, usually unnecessary noises to make their presence known.
There is a rift between belief and denial on the theories and studies proposed by psychic research. Many experiments have been conducted to prove the theories but these studies more often than not failed to serve its purpose. On one proposal made the evidence for the existence of ESP is said to be lacking since the probability of the psychic phenomena is vague. Critics have branded the efforts as pseudoscience because of the absence of repetition of results from other experiments by individual persons. A study to prove multi-sensory connection twins conducted gave a result in favor of Science instead of bringing about a strong evidence that will prove psychic powers do exist.
Science has strict requirements for a given theory to be considered as fact and not a mere hypothesis or a result of pseudoscience. The proofs that had been laid out by psychic research fall below the standards of Science and there are non-paranormal reasons to support the denial of the existence of psychic events; magicians for one are not psychics, they are skilled and make use of non-paranormal techniques which resulted to similar results in the proposed theories. Parapsychologists are continuously working on proving the existence of psychic abilities despite criticisms and previous failed attempts. This somewhat battle between Science and the paranormal activities make the occurrence of certain unexplainable events either easier to understand if not confusing; it makes human existence more meaningful.
